Happy Thanksgiving

We slept well and got up around 4:30 am to pitch dark. It is now daybreak at 6 am, with the roosters reminding the community that it’s time to wake and start the day. Standing outside drinking in the lush tropical scene, with moist air touching my skin, I feel at home deep in my bones.

Gratitude, as a way of life and a spiritual practice, is the theme for today. First, I am deeply grateful for the desire and ability to travel in Asia. Every step of the way has been met with kindness, friendliness and help to find our way through the unfamiliar. Cherie reflected this morning as we tucked into an Indian breakfast, considering the essence of dropping the Western mindset and embracing the food, customs, and spiritual practices.

The other part of our group has arrived in Singapore and has a story to share when we are together. They look happy and excited to be fully in the adventure.

What I love about travel in Asia is traversing brand new territory, not knowing where things are and yet trusting that when lost or confused, we always find our way home. The parallels to life are profound — follow the yellow brick road, and you will arrive home, realizing you were never lost in the first place. The spiritual traditions invite us to look inwardly for truth, peace, belonging, and love, and to remember what has always been there.

Travelling challenges my brain to pay attention, live in the present, and enjoy the mysterious unfolding of each day. While we wait for the rest of the group to arrive, we will Uber into Fort Kochi and enjoy the architecture, food, and the Dutch Palace, the Jewish street and synagogue, and whatever else comes our way.

I struck out on my own this morning for a walkabout. I smiled and said hello to many folks on their way to work.

A father waiting with his school-age daughters nudges them to say hello. Our gaze met for a hearty wave and English hello. It is already warm and humid, in a pleasant way, where your skin and hair feel soft and smooth.
